A Viniou alternative with a narrower focus

Viniou and HomeSomm overlap more than most wine apps: both manage a shared cellar, suggest bottles from your stock, and connect cellar data to AI assistants through MCP. Viniou offers the broader toolkit, while HomeSomm is built around one simpler household question: what should we open tonight?

Status: HomeSomm is in early access and launches in 2026. Features described here are the planned launch scope, and competitor details are accurate as of 2026-09-20.

What Viniou does well

Viniou runs on the web, iOS, and Android, with automatic syncing across devices. It includes label recognition, Excel and CSV import, Excel, CSV, and PDF export, bottle movement history, QR code printing, statistics, market values, and a visual cellar.

It also supports shared access and recommends bottles from your cellar for a dish. Its Premium features include an AI sommelier, automatic ageing calculations, and an MCP connection for assistants including ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral, and Grok.

Where HomeSomm is different

HomeSomm removes the collection analytics, market valuation, maps, QR labels, and visual cellar tools. The smaller scope keeps the main flow centred on adding a bottle, seeing what needs drinking, and choosing from your own wine storage for tonight's meal.

Both products support households and assistant connections, so those features alone do not separate them. The practical choice is breadth versus focus: Viniou is a fuller cellar-management suite, while HomeSomm is intended for a casual household with roughly 20 to 400 bottles.

  • Choose Viniou for valuation, statistics, QR codes, detailed history, and more export options
  • Choose HomeSomm for a more focused dinner-first experience
  • Both support shared access, food pairing from your cellar, and MCP
  • Both offer a free starting point with advanced features on a paid plan

Moving an existing collection

Viniou can export cellar data as Excel, CSV, or PDF. HomeSomm accepts those formats, so you can bring the exported list across and review it before anything is added.

Keep the original export as a backup and check quantities, locations, personal notes, and drinking windows after import, since the available columns can differ between services.

Frequently asked questions

Does Viniou have an AI sommelier?
Yes. Viniou offers an AI sommelier with serving guidance and food pairing. HomeSomm's sommelier is deliberately centred on a few recommendations from your current stock, weighted by drinking window.
Can Viniou and HomeSomm connect to AI assistants?
Yes. Both products support the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, so compatible assistants can answer questions using cellar data. Access is part of each product's paid offering.
Can I move from Viniou to HomeSomm?
Yes. Export the cellar from Viniou as Excel, CSV, or PDF, then import that file into HomeSomm and review the recognised bottles before saving them.
