An Oeni alternative for a shared home cellar

Oeni and HomeSomm both combine cellar tracking with recommendations, but they suit different priorities. Oeni is stronger if you want a visual cellar, market values, and a large wine directory. HomeSomm is narrower: a shared household cellar and practical answers about what to open tonight.

Status: HomeSomm is in early access and launches in 2026. Features described here are the planned launch scope, and competitor details are accurate as of 2026-09-20.

What Oeni does well

Oeni offers iOS, Android, and web apps, with a 3D virtual cellar, bottle valuation, maturity tracking, and a directory of more than 500,000 wines. It can also import an existing collection from Excel or CSV.

Its food and wine pairing feature covers thousands of dishes, and its recommendations learn from tasting notes and consumption habits. Those features make Oeni a broad cellar companion rather than a simple inventory list.

Where HomeSomm takes a different approach

HomeSomm deliberately leaves out valuation and 3D cellar design. It focuses on current stock, drinking windows, and a sommelier that chooses specific bottles from your own wine rack for the meal or occasion you describe.

It is also designed around a household rather than one collector. One Premium subscription includes household invites, so each person has a login while everyone works from the same live inventory. Oeni supports multiple cellar locations, but its public product information does not clearly describe collaborative household accounts.

  • Choose Oeni for 3D cellar views, market values, and a broad wine directory
  • Choose HomeSomm for shared household access and a deliberately simpler experience
  • Both cover inventory, drinking windows, imports, and food pairing
  • HomeSomm Premium also connects the household cellar to compatible AI assistants through MCP

Moving an existing collection

Oeni supports Excel and CSV imports. HomeSomm accepts CSV, Excel, PDF, or a photo of a list, then lets you review the bottles before adding them to your cellar.

Before moving, keep a copy of your original export. Public Oeni documentation explains how to import a collection, but does not clearly document which export formats are available.

Frequently asked questions

Is Oeni or HomeSomm better for a small home cellar?
Choose Oeni if valuation and a 3D cellar view matter to you. Choose HomeSomm if two people share the collection and mainly want to know what to open with dinner.
Does Oeni offer food and wine pairing?
Yes. Oeni offers personalised pairings across thousands of dishes. HomeSomm also provides pairings, but its defining constraint is that every recommendation comes from bottles currently in your own cellar.
Can Oeni manage more than one cellar?
Yes. Oeni documents support for multiple cellar locations within one account. Its public information does not clearly confirm separate household logins collaborating on one inventory.
